New running gear for Christmas!

Hello!

How was your Christmas?

Did you get all the running gear, nutrition, race entries you wanted???

I must've been good this year cause I got everything I could want and more!

From my BRF I got a light up running belt and hair ties!

From my Mother in law I got a hat and gloves as well as new tights and a top!
She also threw in a headlamp and water bottle....she gets me.

All of it at once!!
Last but not least my wonderful, awesome, lovely husband got me a Garmin Forerunner 25! I have only run with it twice so I'm still getting the hang of it but, I LOVE it!!
He got me the purple and black! It matches all my new running gear!
I had so much fun giving gifts this year too and just spending time with ALL 11 of my nieces and nephews! It was crazy and busy and loud and the most wonderful day ever. I love my family.

I love that she has her hand on his back, they're BFF
I hope you all had a great Christmas and that you were able to spend time with your loved ones!

Happy New Year! Only 2 sleeps till 2017!

Time to think of some goals and resolutions!

My BRF and Early Christmas

I can't believe that Christmas is tomorrow!!
I'm ready though, are you? The only thing left for me is some wrapping and I think I will bake some cookies today.

This week I got to run twice with Hattie who is my BRF (best running friend)

We did 3 miles together on Tuesday night and we did 5 miles yesterday!

Our 5 miles started fast but we were going all downhill, so when we turned around it was all up! Fun....

We went on a new road we haven't run and ended up going along a pretty little creek. This may be my new favorite, even with all the uphill.

Eric gave me a gift early so that we could watch it together! The Secret Life of Pets was so so so funny! I loved all the characters but my favorite is Snowball the bunny or Gidget the dog. Seriously, go watch it.

I just thought these lights were so pretty when I saw them out running on Tuesday. Very classy!

Do you have a BRF?

An early Christmas gifts?

Do you like white Christmas lights or rainbow ones?

Winter Running and a Project!

So it has been cold here in Pennsylvania which means running has required a lot of layers and being careful with ice!!

This is my favorite time of year so I don't really mind layering up and slowing my pace. There is just something about Christmas coming and fresh snow that makes me happy!

source

I picked up some cold running gear at old navy and I have gone on a few snowy runs with my friend Hattie. We both wore multiple layers and headlamps, we've sported reflective gear and we have adjusted our pace due to the challenge of trudging through snow!

my winter running outfit, not pictured-hat, gloves, headlamp
If you are going out there this time of year please, please, please be careful! Watch out for ice! Dress warm enough and don't forget to stay hydrated! Believe me you are still sweating and losing electrolytes!

This weekend I decided to tackle a project that I started last year but was too nervous to move forward on. Painting my kitchen. It seemed so daunting due to all the edging and trim work. I also had to paint over wallpaper, something I've never done.
This house was my husbands grandparent and then parents house so there was a bit of nostalgia
This wallpaper was nice to have to remember Eric's grandparents but it was a little bit busy and outdated for me. I wanted to have one room in the house that I had complete creative control on. (I did save a small square of this wallpaper to put a frame around so we could still remember it)
Finished! light grey with cream trim!
I love the new color! It seems so clean to me! It took 2 full days and a whole roll of painter's tape but, I LOVE it!

Also, I got an email with the photo Eric and I took for our church's pictorial directory. I think it turned out pretty great ;)
It's our first picture together for our church directory!! I think we look pretty cute together.

How do you prepare to run in the snow?

Ever painted your kitchen? What color?

Do you have a favorite photo with your spouse?

A day of Christmas shopping!

Yesterday I got done with about 90% of my Christmas shopping in one day!

Crazy!

Source

But before I went out and shopped till I dropped I decided to get in a few miles on my treadmill. I don't know about you but when I am running inside I get super hot so I wear as cool of clothes as possible. Also, since no one will see me I wear whatever I throw on. It's a very freeing feeling! As I got ready to get started I realized I was wearing a Jagermeister T Shirt, I have never even tried the stuff. My old roommate won it at an open house type thing and the shirt is comfy but I've already worn holes in it and the front has a deer eating a spider. Not my typical choice but it worked great for running!
styling
I got showered and headed out to shop. I went to
Bath and Body Works
BAM books and games
Ross
Lowe's
I also shopped amazon for a few things
I grabbed an Iced coffee at McDonald's about halfway through the day and decided that I deserved some wine in the evening for doing so much shopping and oh I had to work in the evening!

After work I gave this a try!
Pretty good, especially happy with the calorie count
I feel so relieved to have so much of the holiday shopping done! I have a few more items to get but I'm not too worried about getting it all done.
I'm most excited about having my shopping for Eric all done :) I think he's going to love his gift.

Where are your favorite places to shop?

Are you done with your holiday shopping?

Ever tried Skinny Girl Wine?

No running this week & getting in the Christmas Spirit

I only ran once this past week. ONCE. Yikes! I had a really intense head cold filled with congestion, coughing, sinus headaches, and fatigue.
source

I tried to stay semi-active by doing a run/walk on my treadmill but I couldn't breathe and had to call it quits. I looked into running/working out while sick and found that many people do NOT recommend it because it exhausts your body, which is already weak and trying its best to fight off whatever you are suffering from. So, I drank a lot of water and tried to get as much sleep as possible and now I'm feeling pretty good, just a slight stuffy nose! So, hopefully I will get to run today!! YAY

On another note, this weekend Eric and I spent some fun quality time with his family!

It was my nephew's 4th birthday and he didn't want cake, he wanted sugar cookies so my mother-in-law made the cutest cookie decorating station!

So Fun!
They even made a few cookies for their Uncle Eekie(Eric) who was napping at the time!
Once we all got sugared up we all headed out to a Christmas tree farm to pick out our trees!

It was so much fun with all the kids to pile on a wagon and run around in all the trees till we found the perfect one!

We decided on a Canaan Fir
We got it all wrapped up, paid for, and loaded into the truck then headed home to decorate!
The best part!!

It's not the biggest tree but it is a pretty one!
We have a variety of sentimental and store bought ornaments
Isn't it pretty!?!?!?!

I love this time of year, I love all the holiday festivities!

What Kind of tree did you get? Real or artificial?
-ours is a canaan fir
What's your favorite Christmas movie?
-mine is White Christmas
Favorite Christmas song?
-Last Christmas by Wham!

My first 10k- Riverside Gobblers Gallop

This past Thanksgiving I gt up early and laced up my running shoes and set out to run my first 10k race!

It was a race held at a local high school and they offer both 10k and 5k races as well as an option to do both.

I decided to do the 10k awhile back in order to try my legs at a new distance.

I got up early and ate some oatmeal, it was a cold and drizzly morning so I decided to wear Capri's and a long sleeved tech shirt and a hat.

I registered and picked up my bib and T-shirt (the shirts are nothing to write home about).
OK, not my favorite race shirt....

I ate a banana then tried to stay warm before heading to the starting line.

The race course went along a creek and was mostly on the roads. It had one short stretch in the woods which was a lot of fun! The course was flat and pretty scenic winding along a creek and farms in rural Pennsylvania, and the rain stopped for our race! Perfection! I took the hat off around mile 3 because the sun was finally warming things up a little bit.

There was a guy running at around the same pace as me sometimes he was pushing the pace and sometimes I was, it was nice to have someone to "run with" during the race.

I ended up getting 3rd place in my age group but I didn't know because I went home right away to start cooking for Thanksgiving! BOO! I would've gotten a medal! I'm Hoping to call tomorrow and maybe they will still have it so I can pick it up!

I hit start 5 seconds after the starting line, whoops!
I ended up finishing in 50:37 with my average pace at 8:10

I tried to start conservative and push the finish! look at mile 6!!
My last mile was my fastest at 7:48!! Unbelievable to me that in June I couldn't break an 11 minute mile, but by staying consistent and adding in stretching and strength I ran a mile with a 7 in front!!!

All in all it was a great race and I am so happy with my performance!

Once I got home I showered, cooked a few dishes with Eric then we headed over to my parents house for dinner. Everything was delicious and it was a lot of fun! Sorry, I didn't take a single picture there! I left my phone in my purse and just had fun catching up with all of my loved ones!

I tried 3 different desserts! They were all yummy, and my Aunt made my favorite, lemon meringue pie!

On Saturday Eric and I set up his deer stand with his brother, father, and 2 nephews and a family friend. It was a nice day to walk in the woods. Afterward I ran 3 miles with my best friend Calley and it felt like we were back in high school running cross country together again.

Here is a family photo!
It isn't easy getting both dogs in one picture

Happy Late Thanksgiving!!

Did you do a race on thanksgiving?

Who are your favorite people to run with?

Ever done a 10k?

Being better about nutrition & changing it up!

Hello! Hope your week is going well.

Things here are going well. We're getting excited for thanksgiving and I'm getting excited for my first 10k race next week!
Source

I will get to my nutrition tips but first I wanted to discuss what I'm changing up.
I don't think I will continue to do weekly recaps, I am not good about remembering to do them and I think it would be best if I just made posts about key runs/workouts as they happen instead of stuffing them all into one big post and forgetting certain details.

Anywho, the nutrition thing.

I fell off the healthy eating wagon. hard. I love to snack and I'm a bit of a grazer and eat just about what I want when I want and I've noticed it affecting my running.

You get out what you put in and I've been putting in a lot of crap and getting out a lot of...well, you get the point.

But, I am back on the wagon and excited to stick to it. So, here are some tips to getting back on track.

-Figure out where you are lacking the most and focus finding fixes there first.
For me this is eating fruit, I just don't eat it. I don't know why but I never crave fruit so I don't buy it. Over the past 2 weeks I've been figuring out which fruits I really really like and I've been introducing them to my daily snacks. This week has included pineapple and papaya!

-Plan some meals ahead of time and stick to it!
For me, if I'm running late and don't have something planned its pizza. So, I've been trying to plan ahead, not meal-prepping(I'm not that organized) but I will think about it the day before or in the morning and that way I'll be ready when I get home. This means big yummy salads, pheasant noodle soup, and enough leftovers to have lunches for the next day.

-Indulge a little, but don't go overboard.
If I don't have something I love like, gummy worms or heath bars, every once in awhile I will go crazy and eat them every day. So go ahead have a treat, but remember it's just a treat and once you're done, get right back to the good, healthy stuff!

-Eat protein
Protein help keep you fuller longer and it helps your body get stronger so don't leave it out. For me I struggle sometimes with this so I try to find some good alternative to just eating meat(although I love meat). I like Greek yogurt as a protein filled snack, or add some granola and honey and I'll have it as my breakfast!

I hope these tips help, they have helped me get back on track and my runs have been feeling a lot better because of it. I feel like I am more properly fueled for my runs and that my recovery is a bit quicker.

Also, here's a picture of Jetty, just cause.

What helps you stay on track?

What's your favorite fruit?

How has your running been lately?

Ramblings

Random ramblings that I feel the need to share.

First one, I haven't been feeling good this week. And it sucks. I think it may have to do with the fact that I haven't been eating right at all. I really need to get back on track with nutrition!

Second one, totally unrelated. What makes someone decide to quit a job without a 2 week notice?
This to me, seems rude.

Third, I miss my dogs while I'm at work, is that weird?

Anyways. Those are a few random thoughts in my head this morning!

What's going through your mind today?

How do you stick to eating healthy?

10 Miles
For real....double digits!

I ran around Moraine State park and it was so beautiful with all the leaves changing.

Cross Training

Friday:
5 mile progression run
This may have been the worst run of my life.....not just my recent running, I mean, ever.
I felt like total crap, dizzy, sick, cramped. I actually started crying during the last 1/2 mile. I don't know why it was so terrible, but it was. I know I didn't get enough sleep, I woke up at 2 am from a nightmare, I know I didn't eat enough cause I was feeling sick, then I ran and felt more sick.
But you know what...bad runs happen. They do. I am thankful I am strong enough to even have bad runs. I decided I would just forget about it and move on.

Saturday:
Rest day!!!
Birthday party for 2 of my sweet nieces, pumpkin carving contest, haywagon rides, and a bonfire! I love love love the wonderful, fun, and loving family I was blessed to marry into.

Sunday:
2 Miles Easy Peasy & 4x100m Strides
Eric ran with me! It was so much fun!!!! We talked and laughed the whole time and I'm really hoping he will start running with me more often.
my hubby!! finally putting in a few miles with me!
today was a great day to run!

Total Mileage:
19
Pretty excited about how close I am to 20....My goal for next week is to put in the miles, listen to my body, foam roll and stretch. And maybe get Sydney and Eric to run with me again!

How was your week?
Do you have any favorite running buddies?

Saturday & Sunday:
Rest days, these I did not plan to rest, but on Saturday my husband and I got up super early to meet friends and help them move, we were helping for about 8 hours. We got home just in time for me to shower and go to work! So, no time/energy to run(although I do believe that by helping move I got a really good upper body workout, my arms are still a little sore). Sunday was teaching Sunday school, church, home for lunch, then I went to work.

Total Mileage= 14 miles

I'm excited for the week to come because I'll only be at 1 job! Which means I will have more time to run and I have some big goals.

How was your week?
Are you increasing miles?
Do you ever run on a treadmill?

SO SO Excited!

Guys, I got something on Monday that I am super excited about that I've never really used before and that a lot of runners hate, but I don't care I'm PUMPED.

Source

Drum Roll Please

I got a TREADMILL!

It's the perfect size for in our front room, and it folds up for storage!

Nothing fancy, does the basics, found on craigslist for $125...works for me!

You may be thinking Sarah, why? You always run outside, why get a dreadmill?
Well, there are a few reasons.

1. I live in Pennsylvania, its already in the 30's in the morning and we will soon get the snow and ice.

2. The sun rises at 7:40 am, I work at either 8 or 9.....and at this point I do not feel comfortable running in the dark.

3. When I do any speed work outside I quickly get discouraged and give up, on a treadmill I will be able to pick a pace and know that it is right, which hopefully will lead to less discouragement.

Nothing fancy, but I love that I can bump it up for intervals, then slow back down for recovery

4. Peace of mind for my husband. This is probably the most important thing for me. He gets nervous when I go out early if he's already at work, or when it's raining, or when it's dark. Knowing I am in the locked house doing my run at 6:45 when its 33 degrees outside dark and raining, makes him less worried, and I love him for being my protector and worrying about me.

5. I can watch TV while I run! That is amazing.

So, long story short. I have used it twice now and I think I see a lot of running on it in my future as conditions will no doubt get worse. I will still try to do all my LSD runs outside, and any other time I can but I love knowing I have this option!

On another note, I signed up for my first 10k! It's on Thanksgiving morning at a local school! I have been slowly increasing my mileage and I am hoping to do a few longer long runs in preparation for this race, but I think I'll use it as a base test, see where I'm at!

Do you ever run on the treadmill?
Any races coming up?

Look at that!
I think this was my last chance to wear a t-shirt and a skirt! It's getting cold now

Friday:
Cross Train
I did the PiYo sweat workout
45 minutes of total body strength training using only body weight!

Saturday:

It was in the 30's raining and windy......I think this pennsylvania winter is going to be a harsh one!

I needed a hat, gloves, and long sleeves!

Sunday:
Rest Day

Sydney decided to rest too...this is not common so I'm enjoying it

Total Mileage: 13.25
Hopefully by next week I'm back up in the 18-20 mile range
